Student Mentorships Series: Preparing Zilin for her career

Zilin Mentorships at University of Bristol

Mentorships: In this series, we ask our students how they found success in the Professional Liaison Network.

Zilin, who is from China and studied BSc Economics at Bristol, explains how the mentoring programme improved her career prospects.

‘My mentor Andrea provided reliable information and advice for job searching and applications. He analysed the pros and cons of big and small firms, which reversed my original impression that big firms are not suitable for everyone, and gave me many tips to prepare for my interview.’

Real life practical cases

Zilin’s mentor also prepared knowledge exchange exercises that helped her think about some real-life practical cases related to public policy or economics issues. ‘He provided the setting, questions, hints and model, then encouraged me to figure out the questions. This simulation for solving problems linked my theoretical knowledge with real-life economic issues.’

The benefits of a mentor

For Zilin, having a mentor with the same major as her was also a significant benefit. ‘I now know more about the types of work related to my economics degree. Communicating with a mentor who could share his real experiences, detailed job duties, and experiences and tips as a person who has already finished their degree was particularly helpful.’

Zilin was also able to build valuable skills. ‘Talking with peers and mentors developed my communication ability. The mentoring scheme also encouraged me to engage more in activities organised by the university.

Achievements at Bristol

‘My biggest achievement at Bristol was receiving a high score in Econometrics, a big breakthrough for me. In middle school, I was not good at maths; however, through continuous efforts, high-quality teaching, and the help of my econometrics tutor, I broke my fear of maths!’

Advice for future students

Finally, Zilin has a message for other students considering the same path, ‘When applying for a mentor, you should look through all the information and choose someone in the field of occupation you’re interested in. During the scheme, you should actively engage with your mentor and peers as it’s a good way to learn alongside people with similar career plans or paths. I encourage international students to apply to the mentoring program. It is an excellent chance to find out more about the field of occupation you are interested in. I found this scheme very helpful and inspirational, and it has helped me make my career plan.’
